JSON to YAML

Convert valid JSON into readable YAML for configuration examples and documents. Objects and arrays are preserved as YAML mappings and sequences, with parsing and conversion done entirely in your browser.

How to use

  1. Paste JSON, upload a local .json file, or load the sample.
  2. Wait for the YAML output to update. Fix any JSON syntax error shown beside the input.
  3. Review scalar values and nesting, especially if the output will be read by another YAML parser.
  4. Copy the YAML or download it with a .yaml extension.

Examples

Configuration object

The nested JSON object becomes an indented YAML mapping.

Input
{"service":{"port":8080,"enabled":true}}
Output
service:
  port: 8080
  enabled: true

List of environments

The JSON array becomes a YAML sequence with one item per line.

Input
{"environments":["dev","stage","prod"]}
Output
environments:
  - dev
  - stage
  - prod

Why convert JSON to YAML

JSON is precise and widely used in APIs, but YAML can be easier to read for hand-edited configuration. YAML expresses nesting with indentation and can avoid much of JSON’s punctuation. This converter is useful when an API response becomes the starting point for a configuration example, or when a team needs to inspect a data structure in a YAML-oriented workflow.

The conversion operates on parsed values. It does not preserve whitespace from the JSON source, because whitespace is formatting rather than data. JSON also has no comments, tags, or anchors, so the output cannot invent those YAML features. The generated YAML aims to be a straightforward representation of the same objects and arrays.

Review before use

YAML parsers can differ in how they interpret certain plain scalars. The serializer quotes values when necessary, but you should still run a configuration file through the parser used by your application before deploying it. If you want to verify the structure here, paste the result into YAML to JSON and compare the data. Copying and downloading use the complete output, even if a very long preview is shortened on screen.

Frequently asked questions

Will comments appear in the YAML?

No. Standard JSON has no comments, so there are no comments to carry over.

Does the conversion preserve object key order?

The converter follows the parsed JSON property order. Verify the output if ordering matters to human readers.

Can I convert any valid JSON value?

Yes. Objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and null can be serialized as YAML.

Is the input sent to a server?

No. JSON parsing and YAML generation happen in your browser.
