Cryptography Tools
SHA-256 Hash Generator
Calculate the SHA-256 digest of UTF-8 text locally. Use the hexadecimal result to compare exact message content or verify a known checksum.
✓ Every tool runs in your browser. We do not upload your input or output.

How to use
- Paste the exact text whose digest you need.
- Run the tool and inspect the 64-character lowercase hexadecimal output.
- Compare it with a trusted expected digest, paying attention to every character.
- Copy or download the digest for your notes.
Examples
Check a release note
Even a trailing newline changes the digest, so use the same source bytes on both sides.

Compare exact text safely
SHA-256 is useful when two people already know what content they expect and want to compare compact fingerprints. Paste a configuration snippet or release note, copy the digest, and compare it with a value from a source you trust. This page uses the browser’s Web Crypto implementation and shows lowercase hexadecimal characters. The text is encoded as UTF-8 first; it is not interpreted as JSON or normalized. A different line ending or an invisible trailing space produces a different value.
A hash by itself does not prove who supplied the original text. An attacker who can replace both the text and its displayed checksum can make the pair agree. For message authentication, use the HMAC tool with a secret that the sender and receiver share. For confidential text, use the AES-GCM tool. The input is processed in your browser’s worker and is not sent to a tool server.
Frequently asked questions
Is SHA-256 encryption?
No. A digest cannot be decrypted to recover the input.
Does whitespace matter?
Yes. Spaces, line endings, and capitalization all change the byte sequence and hash.
Can I hash a password for storage?
Use a dedicated password hashing scheme such as Argon2id or bcrypt, rather than a plain SHA-256 digest.
Does this hash an uploaded file as raw bytes?
No. The workspace reads a file as text and hashes its UTF-8 representation.
