YAML to CSV

Convert a YAML list of records into a CSV table. Flatten nested mapping fields into column names, choose a delimiter, and download data for a spreadsheet or import job.

How to use

  1. Paste a YAML sequence of mappings, upload a .yaml file, or load the sample orders.
  2. Choose a comma, semicolon, or tab delimiter for the destination system.
  3. Check the generated headers and rows; nested mapping keys appear as dotted columns.
  4. Copy or download the complete CSV after reviewing missing values and quoted cells.

Examples

Export order totals

Each mapping becomes one CSV row, and scalar values become cells.

Input
- id: A-101
  customer: Avery
  total: 24.50
- id: A-102
  customer: Morgan
  total: 18.00
Output
id,customer,total
A-101,Avery,24.5
A-102,Morgan,18

Flatten a nested field

A nested mapping produces a dotted header that identifies its path.

Input
- id: 1
  user:
    name: Çağla
Output
id,user.name
1,Çağla

Move a record list into a table

YAML is convenient for a small list of people, products, or test cases. A reporting system or spreadsheet often needs rows and columns instead. This converter takes a top-level YAML sequence of mappings and writes one CSV row per item. The first row contains column names gathered from the records. Records may have different fields; a missing field produces an empty cell rather than removing the column.

Nested mappings are flattened using dotted paths. For example, customer.name makes the origin of a name column clear when the record also has a top-level name. If two paths flatten to the same header, the tool reports a collision rather than silently overwriting a value. An array inside one record is kept as JSON text in a single cell; CSV has no native array type. Review such columns before importing them into a system that expects a specific shape.

Choose the delimiter for your destination

Comma is the usual choice, while some spreadsheet locales expect semicolons and some data pipelines prefer tabs. Select the delimiter before downloading. Quoted cells protect delimiters, quotation marks, and line breaks in values such as names or addresses. The converter uses the same CSV rules as JSON to CSV, so you can move between those source formats without changing the table layout.

YAML comments do not appear in CSV because they are not record values. Scalar types become text cells; numbers may lose visual formatting such as trailing zeros. Check identifiers with leading zeros before importing, since a spreadsheet may reinterpret them. Processing stays in your browser, and the output panel scrolls within the fixed-height workspace.

Frequently asked questions

What YAML shape is required?

Use one top-level sequence whose items are mappings. A single mapping or a list containing scalars is rejected.

How are nested values represented?

Nested mappings become dotted columns. Arrays inside a record are serialized as JSON text in one cell.

What happens when a field is missing?

The CSV includes the column if another row has it and leaves the missing row's cell empty.

Are commas and line breaks escaped?

Yes. Cells containing the delimiter, quotation marks, or line breaks are quoted according to CSV conventions.

Does the conversion upload my records?

No. The browser performs the conversion locally and only downloads a file when you request it.
